Essay Writing: Using A Title Or A Topic? What's the difference between a topic and a title in essay writing? While it may seem like it has little bearing on the quality of your writing, it's important to ensure that you avoid a mistake that will end up costing you your paper and ultimately your grades.
In truth, there is very little difference between a title and a topic, in fact they are often considered the same thing. Though this is true for essay topics in general, in essay writing specifically, there is a difference in which one is being used. When you use a title to describe your essay, you're using it to simply create an outline for your paper. While you can include a point about your topic in your point, you should only do so if it is directly related to your topic. As an example, if you're writing about your love of sailing, you would want to include a paragraph discussing your love of sailing in your main paragraph. But if you're trying to describe your working hours, it would be improper to include a paragraph about your working hours in your main paragraph. On the other hand, when you use a title to describe your essay, you're creating a completely separate essay for each point that you have described in your main paragraph. You might even choose to give both an equal weight. In other words, if you had included a paragraph about your love of sailing in your main paragraph, you would definitely want to include a paragraph describing your love of sailing in your main paragraph again in your title. While it may seem like you're creating two essays for one point, you are actually just noting that you have a point. Because of this, many teachers believe that using the title as your focus instead of the phrase itself is a much better practice than writing about your point. It's just easier, and with more emphasis on you and your writing, students are more likely to feel in control of their work. So long as you're using a title to explain your point instead of your topic, you should be able to manage your own theme for your essay. So long as you focus on the topic that you are writing about, you should be able to make sure that you won't stumble over your essay's main idea. Regardless, of whether you use a title or a topic, if you're going to ask the students to read your paper before it is due, you'll probably need to adhere to a page limit. If you've planned on using a title as your main focus for your essay, you might want to make sure that you have a bit more room to express yourself. Either way, whether you use a title or a topic, make sure that you're following your plan. Without a strong focus on your theme, your essay will always suffer from a lack of focus.
